Winged Monkeys…

Today I feel a little bit like Dorothy as she was carried away by the Winged Monkeys. She had no choice but to go along, and despite the best efforts of her friends the will of someone Wicked was carried out. I’m sure there was a lot going through Dorothy’s head as she was being whisked away and I’m sure she felt helpless. She probably had some regrets and she probably feared what would happen to her in the future. One thing that may have brought her comfort was the fact that she still had the Ruby Slippers, but at the time she didn’t know just how powerful they were.

TMC Journal Fall 07 – Part 7: Semester Recap

Posted on December 24th, 2007 by Cliff Ames Jr.

Well it’s finally time for the Semester Recap! What follows is a list of each class that I took as well as my grade and my experience in the class. I will also brag about how awesome my teachers were. Here goes…

-

B201 – New Testament Survey 1
Dr. Daniel Wong
Tuesday 6:30pm-9:30pm
Grade: A

When I first met Dr. Wong I thought he was the most Christ-like man I had ever met! He was so loving and kind to our rather large class. I know he didn’t always have time to give each and every student one-on-one time but I know he did his best on our behalf. He constantly reminded us how much he loved us as students as well as how much God loved us as well. This class consisted of reading Matthew through Acts and writing synthesis on groups of chapters in each. We also outlined Matthew Chapter 1-7. I had the privilege of leading musical worship each week after the break. It was a blessing and a privilege to do so.

-

BMS383 – Religions Of America
Dr. Brian Morley
Monday/Wednesday 3:30pm-4:55pm
Grade: A-

This was a class on cults that had their start in America such as Jehovah’s Witnesses, Mormons, Christian Scientists and more. We also briefly looked at the spread of Islam in America as well. Since this class was an elective the format was very informal and I enjoyed that a lot. Dr. Morley is very knowledgeable on many subjects and I hope to have him for future classes. I had the opportunity of writing a rather significant term paper on Mormons and Media which Dr. Morley thought was worth looking into publishing.

-

C211 – Intro To Mass Communications
Professor Dave Tuck
Wednesday 6:30pm-9:30pm
Grade: A

This class was a broad overview of the development and progression of various types of media from the beginning of recorded history. We looked at print, radio, television, film and internet and did various projects that related to each. I think my favorite project was the radio project. I got 3 minutes to create and perform an original radio broadcast including a commercial! It was an awesome experience and I hope to come into contact with radio more often in the future.

-

C311 – Video Production 1
Professor Jesse Negron
Monday 6:30pm-9:30pm
Grade: A

This class was a lot of fun to do. I got to use a Hummer H2 for free for a day, got to work with and awesome crew and had the privilege of helping other students in the class that had no experience in producing videos. I got to be the Director of Photography for four different projects and trust me, it was a lot of fun. I think what I most appreciated about this class was our teacher. Jesse is a pro and has a lot of Hollywood experience. He’s got all kinds of experience and connection in “the biz” and knows what it takes to make it there.

-

C351 – Creative Writing
Dr. Jack Simons
Monday/Wednesday/Friday 10:40am-11:35am
Grade: A

This was probably the funnest class I had all semester. I got to write two short stories that Dr. Simons liked and had a fun time in the class learning what it takes to write creatively. This was not an easy class and Dr. Simons expected a lot out of his students. But despite the workload, I couldn’t help but look forward to a boisterous discussion each class period as well as amazing insight into life in general.

Okay so you may be wondering, “Gee 4 “A’s” and 1 “A-” why is the GPA only 3.283? That is because I also have another class on my transcript that is counting for this semester. That class is World History 1 and I signed up to take the class as a Directed Study, meaning I was suppose to do it on my own time during the Summer however, this summer was filled with tons of work, a triple internship that just about killed me plus dealing with my Mom’s illness. Needless to say I didn’t get the class done and right now it is an “F” on my transcript. However my teacher may be able to change my grade and give me some credit if I turn the work into him sometime soon. The only downside is that it has put my overall GPA down lower and put my scholarships in jepordy. Fortunatly the grades I received have kept me afloat for now and hopefully before next semester starts, I’ll be able to get the work turned in.

Shall I Attempt To Speak?

Posted on December 9th, 2007 by Cliff Ames Jr.

Don’t you hate it when you know certain people read your blog and you want to write about them. But you know if you write about them they will know that you are writing about them because if you say, “My friend Stan…” they know you really mean “My friend Sam….” So it’s frustrating.

Or what about a situation where you have a crush someone and you begin to describe them and how they act and all of a sudden the person reading it knows that you are talking about them because you describe an a specific incident, or place or a phrase that they used and it made you lovesick. I think it’s against the rules to find out someone has a crush on you through their blog.

Or what about someone that doesn’t like you. Chances are they won’t read your blog right afterwards it’ll be later when they think, “I wonder if he blogged about me?” And sure enough there is this 500 word post on how you had a fight with a “friend” and of course you call them all sorts of names (except their real name of course) but any person that reads it (especially the friend) knows exactly what happened and who you are talking about.

You can get in all sorts of trouble for the words you use on your blog. I have to admit sometimes it’s tempting when something happens to just lay the whole thing out there for everyone to see and know about. Tell your side of the story and get the truth out there at any cost because it’s your blog and your loyal faithful readers (all 3 of them) deserve to know what is going on so that they can leave their comments of support. And so that your adversary knows that you are not going to take all of this lying down.

But then again there is something in scripture that amazes me. When Jesus stands falsely accused before Caiaphas, the Synoptic Gospels record that Jesus, for the most part, was silent before His accusers (Matthew 26:57-68; Mark 14:53-65; Luke 22:54-71). The only thing He told them was that the Son of Man would be seated in Power. All Jesus does is gives glory to God. He doesn’t argue, He doesn’t fight, He doesn’t threaten them, He doesn’t vaporize them… He is silent except to Praise His Father.

Which reminds me of Job 40. Job has questioned God on a number of occasions and throughout the whole process God does not answer except to glorify His name. When Job finally “gets it” he says:

4″Behold, I am of small account; what shall I answer you?
I lay my hand on my mouth.
5I have spoken once, and I will not answer;
twice, but I will proceed no further.”

-Job 40:4-5

I realize that words are powerful. A favorite song of mine from a musical called Into The Woods says, “Careful the things you say, Children will listen.” Of course I think the Bible says it best:

1 A soft answer turns away wrath,
but a harsh word stirs up anger.

-Proverbs 15:1

Not only are words powerful, they can’t be undone. There is no “do over,” no second chance, no time travel to go back in time and say something over again. And so I am learning about silence. I am learning that there is no need to lash out to my adversaries with words. I am learning that if I do speak it should be with God’s glory in mind.

I am learning how to be silent.*

I have been changed for good…

Posted on December 2nd, 2007 by Cliff Ames Jr.

The following song has recently made it’s way into my life. When I first heard it there were a few names that jumped into my head that perfectly embody these lyrics. By the grace of God theses are guys that have changed me… for good.

Andy, Marcus, Tyler and Jeremy… I think of you when I hear this song.

“For Good”
By: Stephen Schwartz
(From “Wicked”)

-

I’ve heard it said
That people come into our lives for a reason
Bringing something we must learn
And we are led
To those who help us most to grow
If we let them
And we help them in return
Well, I don’t know if I believe that’s true
But I know I’m who I am today
Because I knew you

-

Like a comet pulled from orbit
As it passes a sun
Like a stream that meets a boulder
Halfway through the wood
Who can say if I’ve been changed for the better?
But because I knew you
I have been changed for good

-

It well may be
That we will never meet again
In this lifetime
So let me say before we part
So much of me
Is made of what I learned from you
You’ll be with me
Like a handprint on my heart
And now whatever way our stories end
I know you have re-written mine
By being my friend…

-

Like a ship blown from its mooring
By a wind off the sea
Like a seed dropped by a skybird
In a distant wood
Who can say if I’ve been changed for the better?
But because I knew you
Because I knew you
I have been changed for good

-

And just to clear the air
I ask forgiveness
For the thing I’ve done you blame me for
But then, I guess we know
There’s blame to share
And none of it seems to matter anymore

-

Like a comet pulled from orbit [Like a ship blown from its mooring]
As it passes a sun [By a wind off the sea]
Like a stream that meets a boulder [Like a seed dropped by a bird]
Halfway through the wood [In the wood]

-

Who can say if I’ve been
Changed for the better?
I do believe I have been
Changed for the better

-

And because I knew you…
Because I knew you…
Because I knew you…
I have been changed…
For good
