The Awesomeness Of An Unplanned Adventure

Sunday was an interesting day for me. In the morning I ended up going to church online instead of where I was suppose to go. It was a little weird and I’m still not sure if it really counted or not. It really wasn’t what I planned but sometimes your plans get changed. Later that evening my buddy and I got in the car to actually go to a real church that evening. Now it’s been a while since I went there and so of course I thought I knew the way… in reality I got lost… about 4 times. For those of you who know me I don’t get lost on the freeway that often and I always know how to find my way around. Well we ended up in Simi Valley and various other places looking for a church service to go to where we wouldn’t be late. We found an beautiful Asian church but they weren’t having service. We found a Hispanic church but my Spanish is pretty bad. So we decided to give up and go for an unplanned adventure in Southern California.

We ended up first going to Universal City Walk. We walked around, listened to music, went into some cool shops, did some people watching and had an over all good time. Just when I thought the adventure was over my friend turned to me and asked me if the fun really had to end? We had one adventure why not let it continue. And so I was faced with a decision. I could play it safe, return back to school and just be bored the rest of the night… or we could travel down the freeways of Southern California on a Sunday night when traffic was light and go someplace exciting and unexpected.

Well I chose to continue our adventure so I headed for further south and eventually ended up stopping to see my parents for a bit, introduced them to my friend and finally ended up going to one of my favorite spots in the South Bay. It’s a spot where there are large cliffs that drop off into the Pacific Ocean. It’s a spot where you can hear the waves crash against the rocks. It’s a spot where you can see the entire South Bay and on clear days you can see all the way to Malibu. It’s a spot where I’ve gone many times to sit and think and get away from the hustle and bustle of the South Bay.

What’s funny is my friend asked me, “How do you find places like this?” Thinking back I remembered one night when another friend of mine and I were on a similar adventure. We couldn’t figure out what to do with our time and so he decided to share this spot with me. From that time until now that spot had been a fixture in my life where I had brought others, also opening the door for them to have a place to hang out and contemplate life whether it be alone or with a companion. The bottom line was sometimes you have to take a risk and be willing to have an unplanned adventure in order to find the right spot at the right time.

So go on an awesome, awkward and unplanned adventure sometime and when you do, keep in mind Who it is that really makes the plans in your life.

“Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the LORD that will stand.”
Proverbs 19:21 (ESV)
